I have a habit of looking online every night after dinner. My husband and I had discussed getting a playmate for our chocolate lab, Chase, but we weren’t actively looking. I found the ad for a chihuahua for adoption and decided to look into it more. Mary called me almost immediately and told me Amelia was still available. We were told she was an older dog but with a very sweet disposition. Then came the pictures. We were hooked.
My daughter and I made the trip from Maine to Deerfield, NH one afternoon to meet our new family member. I remember holding Amelia and just instantly falling in love. She is truly a very sweet older lady and I knew she would fit in nicely with our lab and two cats.
She was a bit timid at first but soon began to come out of her shell. We discovered she had dental problems but that was taken care of with the love and generosity that Mary puts in all of her adoptions. I remember a vet tech telling me it was amazing how much this little dog looked to me for comfort and assurance, even more so because she had only been in our family for a few short weeks.
Amelia now comes to work with me at my office on a regular basis. She loves her walks to the local parks, even though she did make me carry her back to the office twice because of snow. She has a friend, Freddie, a mini poodle, who also works at the office. It’s amazing to see how much her personality has blossomed in the 6 months that she has joined our family. She wags her tail at everyone she meets and adores a good back scratch. She loves to roam the office to greet everyone and explore. You can almost see her confidence grow daily.
We have to give huge thanks to Mary, Annette, and everyone else who helped in rescuing this sweet little girl. I still have a habit of looking online every night after dinner, but now I look with a chihuahua beside me in my chair, sleeping, occasionally waking just long enough to kiss my hand and to look at us with those eyes that just seem to say “I’m home.”
